Pediatric Dentistry
Pediatric dentistry focuses on the oral health of children, particularly emphasizing prevention and treatment of cavities. It’s a fundamental part of dentistry because it marks a child’s first interaction with a dentist, and the positive outcome of this encounter can influence the patient for life. A child who is not afraid of the dentist will likely grow into a cooperative adult who regularly attends dental check-ups, thus avoiding major dental issues.
Oral hygiene
Conservative dentistry
When teeth are affected by cavities, the only option left is to treat them. Even if they are baby teeth that will eventually fall out, it’s important to prevent bacteria from spreading to other areas of the mouth and to avoid painful abscesses that may require antibiotics and extractions.
Extractions
Extractions of deciduous teeth that do not fall out on their own, when the successors are already ready to erupt (the famous ‘double-row’ teeth); as well as extractions of teeth repeatedly affected by cavities despite attempts at treatment.
Sealants
They represent the most important and effective form of dental prevention; these are protective coatings that are placed on the grooves of permanent teeth (molars), without altering the bite. They prevent food residue from stagnating on the dental surfaces, at an age when children still struggle to brush with accuracy, especially in the posterior areas. Recommended as soon as the permanent molars erupt.
Fluoride prophylaxis
Topical application of fluoride through fruit-flavored gel, allowing fluoride to pass directly to the tooth enamel via saliva; to be performed once or twice a year. Strengthens enamel and defends it against cavity attacks
